Sensex, Nifty Open Lower Despite Strong Global Markets
Indian stock markets opened sharply lower on Wednesday despite positive global cues, with US stocks hitting a peak overnight and Asian markets trading higher. Sensex fell 433.39 points, or 0.59%, to 72,634.42 by 9.16 am, after opening at 72,965.38 against the previous close of 73,067.81. Nifty 50 shed 171.45 points, or 0.75%, to 22,604.65.
Investors weighed elevated crude prices, rising bond yields and geopolitical risks, with WTI near $90 a barrel and Brent above $100. The US 10-year Treasury yield was above 5% and Japan’s 10-year yield above 3%, adding to market pressure.
Jefferies noted that risk-reward is becoming more favourable for large-caps on relative valuations and narrowed earnings growth gaps. Market participants will also track the policy stance and forward guidance against the backdrop of August CPI inflation at 4.82%.
Top gainers in the Nifty 50 included Dr Reddy’s Lab (+0.94%), Coal India (+0.44%), Bharti Airtel (+0.38%) and Cipla (+0.32%). Top losers were Titan (-3.95%), SBI Life (-1.90%), Asian Paints (-1.72%), Bajaj Auto (-1.62%) and Maruti (-1.50%).
Meesho’s board approved an investment of up to ₹50 crore in Retail Pulse Labs Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Kirana Club, subject to completion of the first tranche of the proposed Kirana Club acquisition. The board also approved an amendment to the Share Purchase Agreement dated June 12, 2026, to incorporate procedural and operational changes, while the overall acquisition consideration remains approximately ₹202.09 crore.
Ola Electric received in-principle approval for a rights issue of up to ₹1,000 crore, with the board to finalise terms including price and ratio.
With the RBI MPC scheduled for today, market participants are awaiting insights on the policy decision and its impact on equity markets, investor sentiment, interest rates and sectoral outlook.
