RBI MPC Meeting Today: 25 bps Repo Rate Hike Expected After Two-Year Pause
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra is set to announce the outcome of the three-day Monetary Policy Committee meeting on October 7, with market expectations leaning toward a 25 basis point increase in the repo rate. If approved, this would mark the first rate hike in over three years, taking the repo rate from its current level of 5.25% to 5.50%. The last increase occurred in February 2023, when the rate was raised to 6.50%, after which it remained unchanged through 2023–24 before the RBI began a rate-cut cycle in 2025.
According to a Mint survey of ten economists, nine anticipate a 25 bps hike, while only one expects the committee to pause. All respondents believe the MPC will maintain a neutral stance, indicating the central bank wishes to preserve flexibility rather than commit to a sustained tightening cycle.
The policy announcement will be streamed live on the RBI’s official YouTube channel starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by a press conference at noon where the Governor is expected to provide broader economic guidance. Investors will also be watching for updates on the reverse repo rate, cash reserve ratio (CRR), statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), and forward-looking commentary on inflation and GDP growth.
Live coverage and real-time updates are being provided by Mint, with the RBI’s policy decision closely watched amid global monetary tightening trends driven by persistent inflationary pressures.
