Nifty 50 reshuffle sees BSE replace Wipro effective 30 September 2026
BSE Limited will replace Wipro Limited in the Nifty 50 index, with the change taking effect from 30 September 2026 after market close on 29 September. This adjustment follows a semi-annual review by NSE Indices, which evaluates constituents based on free-float market capitalisation and liquidity criteria.
According to the review, BSE recorded a six-month average free-float market capitalisation of approximately ₹1,40,879 crore, significantly above Wipro's ₹55,930 crore. For inclusion in the Nifty 50, a stock must have a six-month average free-float market capitalisation at least 1.5 times that of the smallest existing constituent—a threshold BSE met, while Wipro fell below it.
As a result, Wipro will move to the Nifty Next 50 index. Such reshuffles are driven by rule-based methodology rather than fundamental reassessment, aiming to ensure the index reflects current market conditions.
The change can trigger trading activity due to passive fund flows. Index funds and ETFs tracking the Nifty 50 may buy BSE shares to align with the new composition and sell Wipro shares, creating short-term pressure. Analysts note this mechanical buying and selling typically subsides after the rebalancing is complete.
While BSE’s inclusion may attract buying from passive funds, and Wipro’s exclusion may prompt selling, actual price movements depend on broader market sentiment and investor expectations. Technical analysts have flagged weaker setups for both stocks, citing specific downside and resistance levels for monitoring post-rejig.
Investors should note that once passive flows are absorbed, a stock’s performance will depend on its fundamentals, earnings outlook, and market conditions rather than index membership alone.
