MRPL diversifies crude sourcing, reduces West Asia and Russian dependence
Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has stated that no single geography, supplier, or shipping route is decisive for its crude oil sourcing strategy. The company deliberately diversifies its crude supply across regions, suppliers, and routes to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on any single source.
This approach was reiterated by M Shyamprasad Kamath, Managing Director and CEO of MRPL, during the company's 38th annual general meeting while responding to shareholder queries about the impact of the West Asia crisis on crude sourcing.
MRPL's crude oil sourcing from West Asia declined from approximately 66% in 2022-23 to around 27% in the first quarter of 2026-27. Similarly, the company reduced its reliance on Russian crude from 44% to about 27-28% over the same period.
In addition to sourcing strategy, Kamath highlighted the company's growing use of artificial intelligence in operations. MRPL is applying generative, discriminative, and predictive AI across its refinery processes.
Specific AI applications include real-time prediction of melt flow index and xylene solubility in the polypropylene unit, which helps address delays in lab analysis during grade transitions. In the captive power plant, a real-time optimiser manages dynamic power and steam demand, leading to significant oil savings.
The company emphasized that these measures are part of its broader effort to ensure operational resilience and efficiency amid global supply chain uncertainties.
