Meesho shares slip as SoftBank offloads 1.7% stake in block deal
Meesho shares were under pressure on Thursday, September 3, after reports emerged that SoftBank had sold a portion of its stake in the Indian e-commerce firm through a block deal. The stock opened positively but declined to a day's low of ₹208.85 on the BSE, settling 1.3% lower for the session.
A total of 1.7% of Meesho's equity, valued at ₹1,650.4 crore, changed hands in the transaction. This involved the sale of 8 crore shares at ₹206.3 per share, which represents a 2.5% discount to the previous closing price of ₹211.6.
Earlier reports had indicated that SoftBank was planning to sell a 1.5% stake worth approximately ₹1,435 crore. The final deal was larger than initially anticipated, suggesting a scaled-up divestment by the investor.
According to BSE shareholding pattern data as of June 2026, SVF II Meerkat DE, an entity linked to SoftBank Vision Fund II, held an 8.60% stake in Meesho as a public shareholder prior to the transaction.
The block deal follows Meesho's public listing on December 10, 2025, and marks another liquidity event for one of its early institutional investors. BofA Securities India and J.P. Morgan India are managing the stake sale process.
Meesho operates an e-commerce marketplace and reported consolidated net revenue of ₹9,389 crore for the financial year ended March 2025. Since its listing, the stock has delivered positive returns, gaining 3% in one week, over 11% in one month, 22% in three months, and over 37% in six months.
The shares hit a 52-week high of ₹254.65 in December 2025 and a 52-week low of ₹125.70 in March 2026.
In the first quarter of FY27, Meesho narrowed its consolidated net loss to ₹132.8 crore from ₹289.4 crore in the same quarter of the previous year. Revenue from operations surged 48% year-on-year to ₹3,712.8 crore.
The company also improved its operating performance, with EBITDA loss reducing to ₹224.7 crore from ₹264.4 crore in Q1 FY26. Net Merchandise Value (NMV) rose 34% year-on-year to ₹11,614 crore.
Meesho's contribution margin expanded to 4.6% of NMV, up 54 basis points sequentially, driven by logistics efficiencies and better platform monetisation. Annual transacting users grew 29% year-on-year to 274 million, and the platform recorded 725 million placed orders during the quarter, a 29% increase compared to the prior year.
Prepaid orders made up around 37% of shipped orders, contributing to lower cancellation and return-to-origin rates.
